๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ A historic win taking shape

D.C. Council member Janeese Lewis George is on track to become the first democratic socialist elected mayor of Washington, D.C., after pulling nearly 53 percent of the vote in Tuesday's Democratic primary. With two-thirds of ballots counted, she leads former at-large council member Kenyan McDuffie by more than 16 percentage points.

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ What drove her campaign

Lewis George, who has served on the D.C. Council for six years, built her campaign around housing affordability and organized labor. She collected endorsements from nearly every major union in the city, which also got her into some trouble. Four days before the election, D.C.'s Office of Campaign Finance fined her campaign $16,000 for allegedly coordinating with labor groups. Her team denied the claim and called it a last-minute attempt to derail her.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ How the votes broke down

Lewis George led in every ward except Ward 3, one of the city's wealthiest neighborhoods. Tuesday's election was also the first time D.C. used ranked-choice voting, adding a layer of history to an already closely watched race.

๐Ÿšจ Trump's response

The race drew national attention after President Trump threatened to place Washington under direct federal control if Lewis George won. "Maybe we take back Washington, run it on the federal basis," Trump said when asked about the prospect of a "crazy socialist" leading the District.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ No Republican in sight

Because no Republican candidates entered the race, the Democratic primary winner automatically becomes the next mayor. Outgoing Mayor Muriel Bowser, whose tenure included repeated public clashes with Trump, chose not to seek another term and did not endorse anyone in the race. If Lewis George's lead holds, she takes office without ever facing a general election opponent.
