GMCS TV
Dr. Janice Makela told us something at CannMed in Puerto Rico that stopped us cold…
“I can prescribe cocaine… but I can’t prescribe cannabis.”
Coming from a hospice and palliative care doctor with 20+ years of experience… that truth hits hard.
She sees cannabis ease pain, calm anxiety, help patients eat, and bring dignity at the end of life — yet the law still blocks her from prescribing it.
This is why these conversations matter.
This is why Compassion in Action exists.

📢 Who’s Speaking for Georgia’s Patients? 📢
At the recent Blue-Ribbon Study Committee on Georgia’s Medical Ma*****na and H**p Policies, GMCS Co-Founder & Director of Operations, Social Justice, and Advocacy Yolanda Bennett raised a powerful question:
“All we keep hearing is the bad — what about the good? What about the thousands of patients whose lives have improved because of medical cannabis? Let’s talk about the science and the real-world outcomes, not just the fear-driven talking points.”
Yolanda also addressed the facts about Cannabis Use Disorder — which affects only 9% of cannabis users compared to 15% for alcohol and 32% for to***co (NIDA). For medical patients under proper care, the rate is even lower.
Despite this, there is still no direct patient or consumer representation on the committee. Even the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission (GMCC) — the agency overseeing the Low THC Oil program — was not present to speak.
📅 Updated Meeting Schedule:
Sept 4 – Augusta (2:00 PM – 4:00 PM) – H**p & consumable h**p products (GA Dept. of Agriculture)
Sept 25 – Macon – Medical cannabis (GA Dept. of Public Health)
Oct 21 – Atlanta – Final meeting (details to come)
If public comment is allowed, show up and make your voice heard. Patients deserve to be part of this conversation.
💚 The Georgia Medical Cannabis Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2019 by patients, for patients. We stand for Patients Over Profits and have submitted our interest to present, along with expert witnesses ready to share science, data, and patient-centered solutions.
The voice of the patient matters.
📺 “Cannabis is not a drug… it’s a medicine.” – Mike Tyson on Fox News
In a recent Fox & Friends interview, boxing legend Mike Tyson called out the hypocrisy of outdated cannabis laws. He demanded: 🔊 Rescheduling cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III
🔓 Clemency for those still serving time
💰 Fair banking access for cannabis businesses
🗣 “Cannabis is in the same category as heroin… there’s no comparison. That’s ridiculous.”
🔥 Celebrity voices like Tyson’s are helping bring national attention to what advocates have been saying for years: Cannabis heals. Criminalizing it harms.
But we can’t stop at soundbites — policy must follow.
🛡️ The Rohrabacher–Farr Amendment (a.k.a. the CJS Medical Cannabis Amendment) is up for renewal. This federal protection prevents the DOJ from interfering with state medical cannabis programs. If it lapses, patient protections could disappear.
📜 Meanwhile, Americans for Safe Access (ASA) is pushing for the Cannabis and Cannabinoid Act, which would:
Create an Office of Medical Cannabis and Cannabinoid Control
Provide a federal regulatory pathway for cannabis therapies
Ensure that patients, not politics, are centered in cannabis policy
📍Here in Georgia, we saw an attempt to bring similar relief through HB 301 – the Time Served Act of 2025. This bill aimed to automatically seal and restrict certain non-violent convictions — including low-level cannabis offenses — five years after sentence completion. Unfortunately, it never made it out of committee.
📢 These stalled bills show why public pressure matters. Reform isn’t just about legalization — it’s about liberation.
💬 Let's talk:
▪️ Should rescheduling automatically come with clemency and expungement?
▪️ Would a dedicated federal office finally give medical cannabis the structure and recognition it deserves?
▪️ Why do bills like HB 301 die in committee while lives remain impacted?
