Celebrating Black History Month and Honoring Norma Merrick Sklarek: A Trailblazer in Architecture 🏛️✨

Meet Norma Merrick Sklarek —a visionary architect who shattered barriers as the first Black woman licensed in New York (1954) and California (1962). Born in Harlem to Trinidadian parents, she defied the odds, earning her architecture degree from Columbia University and later co-founding one of the first female-owned architecture firms—Siegel, Sklarek, Diamond.

Known as the "Rosa Parks of Architecture," Sklarek led major projects like LAX Terminal One, the Pacific Design Center, and the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. She often found herself the only woman, and the only Black architect, in the room—but that never stopped her. Instead, she paved the way for future generations, mentoring young architects and advocating for diversity in a field that still has a long way to go.

Her legacy is more than just buildings—it’s breaking ceilings and opening doors. 🏗️💪 Let’s honor her impact by continuing the push for representation and inclusion in architecture today.

Another exciting project in Nashville – the Soundwater Apartments! This 320-unit development, located in the vibrant Metro Center district just north of downtown, adds to the growing architectural landscape of the city.

Designed with modern living in mind, Soundwater Apartments brings a unique blend of style, functionality, and community to the area.

A huge thank you to Southeastern Development Company for partnering with us on this incredible project. We’re grateful to be part of such a talented team that helped bring this vision to life. Excited to see how Soundwater Apartments will contribute to the ongoing transformation of Nashville’s urban core!

Welcome Hayden Turner to the team! 🎉

In her free time, Hayden enjoys running and working out, supporting local arts and musical theater, and exploring new and exciting places.

She has a special interest in Amsterdam. During a flight delay, she had a three-hour layover there and got a brief glimpse of the city. While she can technically say she’s been to Amsterdam, she would love the chance to fully explore it.

From a young age, Hayden has been fascinated by how architecture, theme parks, cruise ships, and how themed environments are designed to enhance visitors’ experiences. When she discovered that she could pursue a career in this industry, she was immediately sold. She has always wanted to work in the construction industry.

We are thrilled to have Hayden join our team and bring her passion to our projects!

Welcome, Ashely Dubey to the team! 🎉

Ashley has joined the Studio Architects team as one of our Project Coordinators.

Ashley loves to spend her free time either reading a book or watching a movie. If she could travel anywhere, she would visit Norway to see the fjords and northern lights. Her interest in pursuing a career in architecture was sparked when she saw Ancient Greek and Roman architecture at the age of 10.

Ashley attended Auburn University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor of Interior Architecture.
