Tromperie (2021)
, also known as Deception, is a French romantic drama directed by Arnaud Desplechin, based on Philip Roth's 1990 novel. Set in 1980s London, the film follows Philip (Denis Podalydès), a renowned American writer living in exile, who engages in a series of intimate and philosophical conversations with his English mistress (Léa Seydoux) in his secluded office. Their dialogues delve into themes of desire, fidelity, identity, and the blurred lines between reality and fiction. The narrative unfolds through eleven chapters, each focusing on different women from Philip's life, including his wife (Anouk Grinberg), a former lover battling illness (Emmanuelle Devos), and a former student (Rebecca Marder). These interactions serve as both personal revelations and material for Philip's writing, challenging the boundaries between his experiences and his literary creations.
Critically, Tromperie received mixed reviews. While some praised its intellectual depth and the performances of the cast, others found the film's stylized dialogue and theatrical presentation to be distancing. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021 and was released in France on December 8, 2021. For those interested in a contemplative exploration of love, memory, and the complexities of human relationships, Tromperie offers a nuanced cinematic experience.
