It was 158 years ago, June 19, 1865, that slaves in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom from Union soldiers. That reading of the announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army General Gordon Granger, proclaimed the freedom of Black people in Texas. This was two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln. Most historians point to April 9, 1865, as the date the Civil War ended with the surrender of Confederate General Robert Lee.
