I’m excited and honored to be spending more time with the wonderful students

We lost another great civil rights leader. At only 11 years of age in 1965, Joanne Bland was one of the youngest foot-soldiers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Bloody Sunday, in Selma, AL.

Arrested more than ten times before the age of 10, she was highly principled and direct, demanded respect and yet at the same time, she loved fiercely.

Every time I’d see her she’d say, “Come over here and get some love.”

In her own words, “I don’t need you in your happy place. I need you on the battlefield until all lives really do matter. You are here to serve, not to save. Leave the saving to God; don’t be anyone’s savior. Be a history-maker and vote!”
