As we close ALK-positive Awareness Month, we reflect on the people whose stories continue to guide this community—like Gina Hollenbeck, who reminded us to look toward the stars, and John Pender, who lived by the belief to never give up.

Today, we are honored to announce Matthew Nielsen as the 2026 recipient of the John Pender Scholarship.

Matthew’s journey began with his mother’s diagnosis, but it has grown into something more—a commitment to advancing research and helping future families find answers.

As Matthew shared:

"My mom's diagnosis introduced our entire family to the ALK-positive community... It has shown me that behind every breakthrough are families like mine waiting for answers."

This scholarship represents more than support—it represents a bridge between today’s challenges and tomorrow’s possibilities.
