A tree planted too deep, or one that started in a container with roots circling instead of spreading outward, can develop a root wrapped tightly around its own trunk.

Over years that root keeps growing and slowly cuts off the tree's circulation from the inside. It is one of the most overlooked reasons a mature, seemingly healthy tree declines with no obvious cause, no storm damage, no visible pest, just a tree that thins out a little more each year.

Small, spindle-shaped bags hanging from arborvitae, juniper, or cedar foliage are a sign of bagworm activity, and mid-summer in Metro Atlanta is when infestations become impossible to miss.

Each bag holds a caterpillar feeding on the foliage around it. A light infestation thins a few branches, but a heavy one can strip an entire evergreen bare in a single season, and evergreens don't always recover the way deciduous trees do.
