Laena Velaryon was supposed to be older than Rhaenyra. Why did the show change it?

In George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood, Laena Velaryon is several years older than Rhaenyra Targaryen. However, House of the Dragon changed their ages and made them part of the same generation. The biggest reason was storytelling.

By making Laena and Rhaenyra closer in age, the show was able to create a stronger friendship between them and simplify the complex timeline of the book. The adaptation already had multiple time jumps, aging actors, and a large cast of characters, so reducing age gaps helped make the story easier for viewers to follow.

The change also allowed the series to explore shared experiences between the two women, including marriage, motherhood, and the pressures of their noble status. While some book fans preferred the original timeline, many felt the adjustment helped strengthen the emotional connections between key characters.

It's one of the most notable changes the show made from the source material.
