A 1990 study reported by MIT Press found that middle-income children are read to aloud an average of 1,200 hours by the time they reach kindergarten. Lower-income children are read to about 25 hours. According to a 1996 literacy study cited by the Children’s Book Bank, 61% of lower income families have no children’s books in the home. This lack of books puts kids at a disadvantage because 75% of students who are poor readers in third grade remain poor readers in high school. According to a 1998 report from the Ferst Foundation children develop much of their capacity to learn in the first three years of life when their brains grow to 90% of their eventual adult weight. If these statistics stun you, please consider donating age-appropriate books to CHILDREN READ, a non-profit organization that aims to correct these deficiencies. Won’t you join us?
