Today is my Dad’s birthday. And it’s the first one since he passed away earlier this year. It’s honestly hit me harder than I was expecting. It made me realize that this is the start of a lot of “Firsts” without him. It will soon be the first Halloween without him. The first Thanksgiving without him. My first birthday without him. And then my first Christmas without him. My favorite time of the year is going to be marked by many days that brutally remind me that he’s gone. I honestly don’t know how I am going to handle any of it.
This year has been one of the hardest of my life. With losing my Dad being the absolute largest part of that. But at the same time it’s been the most successful year of my professional career. And that has been a very difficult circumstance to navigate emotionally. I am so, so thankful for all of the successes I have had. I’ve had more published covers than I had almost all of the last 2 years combined, I’ve done/am doing far more conventions this year than any previous year including being a featured guest at many of them, and I have gotten to create artwork for IP’s that I’ve adored since I was a kid. But with all of that has come a monumental amount of added stress & anxiety. More covers has meant a massive amount of extra workload with insane deadlines, all the while getting ready and going out of town sooo much more than I ever have before, while still having all of the facets of my work that I have had to do on my own for the last several years. Then you add in all of the incredibly difficult things that have been happening in my personal life, especially as of late, and I feel like I have been burning at both ends and am running out of wick. I’ve been doing my absolute best to hang on through it all, and it’s all by the grace of God and the small group of amazing family and friends that I have supporting me that I have hung on. It’s all just so much. And the thing that cuts through all of it the sharpest is how much I miss my Dad. I wish he was here. He would know exactly what to say to give me strength, and to help push my head back up through all of the things happening in my life.
I miss the absolute hell out of you Dad.
