The 4th of July is the perfect time to think about how we teach American history, and how the arts can make it stick!

Through arts integration, students don't just read about history. They step into it: enacting historical figures, analyzing the music and dance of the era, or studying photographs and artwork as a window into the past.

One of our favorite examples is a lesson that brings the American Revolution to life through theatre and visual art. Students study historical images, write poems from the perspective of a key figure, and then perform those poems together as a class, building literacy skills, historical understanding, and empathy all in one lesson.
