I’m on the plane leaving a place where I left my heart many years ago. By chance, I stumbled upon an NYT interview with . I’m deeply inspired by her wisdom and words: her groundbreaking business focused on women’s stories, entrepreneurship, success, challenges of building a career with young children. I have been there! On storytelling: in Italy, I find my voice, my openness, my strength, and love for storytelling. If this is the wrong platform, so be it. I’m at an age where I’ve raised my kids, built a business, and am now awaiting a grandson from my step-daughter. Reflection comes often, and it’s raw. And it’s true about women our age: we really don’t give a rip what anyone thinks.
To women of all ages: if you have an idea or a passion, run with it. Follow your heart. Follow your gut (harder). Ignore naysayers. Plow ahead. Don’t overthink it. I started a children’s clothing company when my daughter was 6 months old. She was my muse. I knew nothing about the industry, but dove in, with my daughter on my hip in a male-dominated society. I sought out artisan women in the Tuscan countryside to execute my designs: smocked dresses, hand knit sweaters, embroidered linens and ruffled beachwear. I was 28. I’m now on the heels of 57.
