The American Foundation for Su***de Prevention (AFSP) recognizes the month of September as National Su***de Prevention Month: a moment in time in which we rally the public to create awareness of this leading cause of death, and inspire more and more people to learn how they can play a role in their communities in helping to save lives. Alternatively recognized as National Su***de Prevention Week (generally the week after Labor Day) and World Su***de Prevention Day (September 10), AFSP takes advantage of the full month to offer understanding and guidance for the public through special events, personal stories and perspectives, shareable social graphics and other materials designed to help people know what they can do if they or someone they know is struggling, and how to have authentic, caring conversations about su***de and mental health.

Su***de prevention is important every day of the year. National Su***de Prevention Month gives us an opportunity to shine a special, encouraging light on this topic that affects us all, and send a clear, hopeful message that help is available, and su***de can be prevented.

How to Make Sure You Feel Safe at School:

KEEP A GROUNDING ITEM.

Grounding is a way of keeping your mind in the here and now and is a great way to help you feel safe and in control when your anxieties are spiraling. There are many ways to ground yourself, like breathing exercises or going for a walk. A grounding item is a physical object and can be a great way to help you feel grounded without leaving the classroom or distracting others. Some examples are a smooth rock you keep in your pocket, a fidget toy, a photo of a loved one or pet, or anything to hold onto that soothes you. Tell your teacher about your grounding object so they don’t think it’s a toy or distraction and take it away.
