“I Choose to Live”—Beverly’s Journey with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy 09/12/2025

Not long ago, Beverly’s health was in crisis, with multiple hospitalizations and no clear answers. An ultrasound revealed the cause: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a genetic heart condition.

With her future uncertain, Beverly turned to Dr. Tamer Attia at Emory Heart & Vascular, which specializes in care for this condition. Confident in Dr. Attia and team, Beverly decided to undergo a high-risk surgery. “I told my favorite nurse, Emily, that if I ever got strong enough, I would travel the world," says Beverly.

Today, she's living that dream—exploring Greece, Italy and Hawaii, with Morocco next on her list.

Christy was just 24 when her kidneys suddenly began to fail.

After weeks of not feeling like herself, she was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease and started dialysis immediately. Life changed quickly — she could no longer work, couldn’t drive, and spent her days exhausted, foggy, and waiting for a transplant match.

But one thing never changed: Nick, her boyfriend at the time, stood by her side through every moment.

When Christy was referred to Emory Transplant Center, Nick didn’t hesitate. He got tested — and was a match.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Christy said. “I didn’t expect that at all.”

Their transplant surgeries were successful, and recovery brought renewed energy and new beginnings. The Emory care team still remembers seeing them walking the halls together during recovery. “The love between them is obvious,” one nurse shared.

Exactly three years later, Christy and Nick stood side by side again — this time on a beach, saying “I do.”

💙 Their story is a touching reminder this Donate Life Month:
Love can heal. One decision can change — and even save — a life.
