Born and raised through out Long Island, Jermel Howard, is the example that with hard work and determination, anything is possible. “My Grandmother died when I was nine years old. My mother was in and out of jail at the time”, states Howard. Jermel was born far from many of life’s simple pleasures that we often take for granted. In and out of shelters and foster care homes from the age of 9 to 19,
Howard lived a life of hardship while struggling to maintain contact with his four younger brothers. Finishing his High School requirements at Nassau Community College, shortly after, his former Principal of Freeport High School, Mr. Kight, then awarded Howard with his diploma. Utilizing basketball as his escape, Howard hooped for Freeport High School and just about any open gym within his reach. “I love basketball”, states Howard. “Whenever the opportunity presents itself, I definitely jump at the chance to get a great run”. Potentially dangerous and well armed with no parental support or guidance, Howard was in and out of of the legal system for seven years. “From 1998-2005, I wreaked havoc on the lives of others and most importantly, myself”, states Howard. “I had to take it upon myself to make the commitment to steer clear of trouble and channel that energy into other things such as acting and music. Focusing on my future and family became my priority”.
“Music was always my mantra. As a teen, I battled with the best of them”, recalls Howard a/k/a Sharpp. “Battling Biggie in front of Lauren Hill at Jones Beach during the Greek Fest was definitely an awesome experience”. Participating in talent shows and showcases with his group, NFL and the Bounty Hunters was fun, but a highlight was winning BET’s “Freestyle Friday” twice on the hit show, “106th & Park”. When asked where he acquired the name, Sharpp, he states, “I always kept a razor or some type of blade inside of my mouth or jaw. While in and out of the legal system, blades were my protection against the elements”, reflects Howard, who is happy that he no longer has to live his life that way. “Once I made the decision to live my life in a more productive manner, physical weapons were no longer necessary. Now, I use my brain and God given talents”. Meeting Boot Camp Click (Rockness and Buck Shot Shorty) were also memorable music moments for him. “One day, I was standing outside of a record label. I would often do that in an effort to see a celebrity or executive who could possibly provide me an opportunity to share my music. I met Fambino & Jab (Fat Joe’s uncle) in front of a record label. From ther, they then became my managers. I then recorded a song with Fat Joe called, “Oh My Goodness” and went on tour to promote myself as an Artist. While traveling to promote his own music, Jermel met an agent who took a liking to his style and energy. “The agent then suggested that I go out on a few auditions. Long story short, I landed all four of them”, recalls Howard. Jehu Bernard then became my manager. In 2007, Howard landed a major role in the film, “The Brave One” starring Jodie Foster and “American Gangster” starring Denzel Washington. Acting opportunities such as “Law & Order” (2011), NYC 22 (2012) produced by Robert Deniro; “Golden Boy”(2013), “Major Crimes” (2013); the role of Donte’ in the Netflix hit series “Orange Is The New Black”; and “Person of Interest” (2014) were also next in line for an appearance by Howard. In 2015, Jermel participated in the largest marketing campaign ever created by Nike. He participated in 10 commericals for the promotion of Kevin Durant’s sneaker, “KD’s” commercials and particpated on his team during the summer basketball series. Other endorsements include his participation as a Brand Ambassador for RetroFitness in Nassau County, Long Island. In 2016, Jermel landed a major role as Shameek on Marvel’s Netflix installation of “Luke Cage”. At the top of 2017, Howard will be making an appearance on the Starz hit series, “Power” Season 4. “I am so excited about this role. Taping is under way and I am fulfilling some of the affirmations I often declared over my life. Working with 50 Cent has been a humbling experience and a dream come true”, states Howard who plays the role of Brains on this upcoming season. With regards to film, Howard will play the role of Mopreme, Tupac’s brother, in the highly anticipated movie, “All Eyez On Me”. “Roxanne, Roxanne” is another film set to release. In this film, Howard will play the role of Roland the Rapper. No release date has yet to be set for this film. In 2015, Howard released his first Ebook, “How Men Act in A Relationship & Why”. Available on Kindle, Howard harps on his rendition of what a woman needs to know in order to maintain a happy relationship with her man. This quick read is real and comical as Howard gets to the meat & potatoes of what a man thinks. When asked where does he see himself five years from now, Howard states, “I will be the head of a major conglomerate, successful restaurant, owner of a movie theatre chain, and have my very own production company with several film and tv shows publicly released on networks.”, smiles Howard. For fun, Howard enjoys playing basketball, shooting pool, and bowling.
