History reports that the first peach came to the Georgian coast in 1571 when Franciscan monks planted the fruit tree on St. Simons and Cumberland islands. From there, the peach flourished and thrived in the Georgian soil, and the fruit’s sublime flavor and popularity even earned Georgia the nickname, the Peach State. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan declared August, the peak of peach growing season, National Peach Month.
