I'm Anna (50F). After my mother's death, I returned to her home to pack her belongings into boxes.
My father died when I was little, so it was always just my mother and me. Even after I started my own family, we stayed close. Her death left a hollow ache in my chest.
While going through her things, I found old photo albums in the attic. Sitting on the living room floor, I flipped through pictures of birthdays, school days, and moments I barely remembered—but could still feel.

Then a photo slipped out.
I froze. I was two years old, and next to me stood another little girl, maybe two or three years older—and she looked exactly like me.
On the back, in my mother’s handwriting:
"Anna and Lily, 1978"
I had never heard of Lily. Not once.
The only person who might know was my aunt Margaret, my mother’s estranged sister. Heart pounding, I drove to her house and knocked.
She opened the door, gray-haired and leaning on a cane, and recognized me instantly. My hands shook as I showed her the photo.
“Who is this girl?” I whispered. “Why does she look exactly like me?”
Tears welled in her eyes, and I knew the answer would change everything.
