A trailblazer in HBCU history, Mary Elizabeth Branch redefined Black higher education. As the first female president of Tillotson College (now Huston-Tillotson University), she transformed the institution from a junior college to a four-year university, expanding academic opportunities for generations of Black students.
Her leadership and dedication to equity in education continue to inspire. This Women’s History Month, we celebrate her impact and the powerful legacy of women shaping HBCUs.
