The fifth time my husband stayed out all night, I didn’t call him, cry, or ask where he was. At 3:17 a.m., I opened the company-wide Slack channel used by more than five hundred employees at Prescott Global and typed, “Good morning. This is Claire Prescott. I’d like to thank Jasmine Cole for taking such exceptional care of my husband. Effective today, Aaron no longer needs to come home.”
Then I hit Send.
For three seconds, nothing happened.
Then the read count exploded.
Twelve.
Two hundred.
Three hundred.
Four hundred twenty-eight.
My phone rang immediately.
Aaron Prescott.
I declined it.
He called again.
Declined.
On the third attempt, I shut my phone off and walked upstairs.
For three years, I had kept our home outside Boston running like a luxury hotel. Aaron’s suits were sorted by season, his watches stored in individual cases, his shirts pressed, his cuff links polished.
Lately, he barely came home to see any of it.
So I pulled two suitcases from the closet and packed everything.
By 7:00 a.m., I was standing in the marble lobby of Prescott Global headquarters with Aaron’s clothes, his spare executive badge, and one sealed envelope.
The receptionist looked terrified.
“Mrs. Prescott?”
“These belong to my husband.”
I placed the envelope on top.
“And this is a proposed divorce settlement. Please ask him to have his attorney review it when he has time between meetings.”
The elevator doors opened behind me.
Employees poured into the lobby.
Whispers followed immediately.
“She actually brought his clothes.”
“So the Slack message was real?”
“I heard he was with Jasmine again last night.”
I didn’t look back.
Outside, I turned my phone on.
Sixty-three messages.
Twenty-seven missed calls.
Aaron.
His mother.
His sister.
Board members.
I ignored all of them and called my mother.
“Mom, I’m divorcing Aaron.”
She was silent for three seconds.
Then she asked, “Have you packed your things?”
My throat tightened.
“No.”
“Your father and I can come.”
She didn’t tell me to calm down.
She didn’t ask me to forgive him.
She simply believed me.
That nearly broke me more than anything Aaron had done.
At two that afternoon, I walked into the office of Nathan Brooks, an old law-school friend who had become one of Boston’s top family-law attorneys.
He handed me an Americano.
“No sugar.”
I blinked. “You remember?”
“You complained about sweet coffee for three years.”
Then his expression turned serious.
“Tell me what we’re dealing with.”
“Three years of marriage. Prenup. No children.”
“Joint assets?”
“Some.”
“What do you want?”
“Nothing that belongs to Aaron.”
Nathan stopped writing.
“I don’t want his company, his trust fund, or his family’s money. I want what was mine before him.”
I told him about the waterfront property in Marblehead my father had transferred to me before the wedding.
Then my investment accounts.
Every statement documented.
Nathan nodded.
“You came prepared.”
“I’ve had a lot of sleepless nights.”
But there was one thing Aaron didn’t know.
Not his mother.
Not his attorneys.
Certainly not Jasmine.
I looked directly at Nathan.
“My grandfather left me a minority stake in a private investment company before I married Aaron.”
His pen stopped.
“How large?”
“Large enough that we need to discuss it before his lawyers start digging.”
“Does Aaron know?”
“No.”
“Was any of it ever mixed with marital money?”
“Not one cent.”
Nathan leaned back slowly.
And then he smiled.
That was when I understood the part Aaron still hadn’t figured out.
For three years, he had treated me like the invisible wife who should feel lucky to carry his last name, while Jasmine stood beside him at dinners, galas, retreats, and company events like she belonged there.
Fine.
She could have the spotlight.
Aaron thought the worst thing I had done was embarrass him in front of five hundred employees.
He was wrong.
The Slack message wasn’t revenge.
It was just my resignation.
And when his attorneys finally discovered exactly who the wife he ignored really was, Aaron Prescott was going to learn how expensive it could be to underestimate someone for three straight years...
