Today was a great example of “if the conditions are not right, you should not dive”.
We had a training dive at Lake Whitney planned for today to do a deep dive. The skies were overcast and the group had never explored Lake Whitney.
We had gathered some local knowledge from some instructors who had dived the area many times.
We sent a Diver out approximately 50 feet from the shoreline and he dropped a computer to the bottom attached to a reel so we could get a temperature. The surface temperature was 71°. The temperature at 18 feet was 62°.
This was to be a training dive to complete the deep dive requirement for an Advanced Scuba Diver certification. None of the students had ever dived greater than 30 feet and none of the students had ever experienced cold water below 60°. While we didn’t know the full temperature at 70 feet, based upon experience of thermoclines and typical East Texas Lakes, the instructors surmised the temperature would easily be in the 50s. It was at that point we made the determination that this dive was not going to happen today.
The students were equipped with 3 mm wetsuits, 3mm shorties with gloves and hoods. The thermal protection was not enough to guarantee safety.
All of us had traveled at least two hours to the dive site and we were all disappointed we could not make the dive. However, safety is always the number one concern. After we made the decision to call the dive, we found a restaurant and had a great breakfast together with good fellowship and discussions of other diving opportunities.
Moral of the story: Don’t risk it, go find some biscuits
