This quote really speaks to the difference between Empath*ology and the diagnostic model. Empath*ology looks to the root causes of our distress. When a need is not being met, we believe as Manfred Max Neef believes, that life will be less than wonderful. You might even experience pathologies according to Neef.
Are you struggling to find health promoting food? Struggling to pay rent? Unable to exercise as much as you would like? Not able to get sunlight during the day? These are fundamental human needs (food/shelter/water/sun) and without them satisfied on a regular basis, we begin to feel ill.
Diagnostic models like the DSM look at the symptoms and create diagnostics and use evidence to find the best way to treat symptoms. Oddly it is rarely the goal of practitioners of the DSM to address causes in the environment and work on understanding those before advising treatment. We don’t advise specific treatment but we do hope to unearth the roots, help you to examine the soil and assess what amendments could be added to help your tree flourish!
Book a session today if you’re seeking empathy on your path to growth 🌱
We aren’t saying that one way is better than the other, only that we see great benefit to listening and hearing for unmet needs you might have. These needs we believe are the roots, and the soil. With poor soil health and roots that don’t support the tree, it can be hard to have healthy branches and leaves.
Thanks to for so many tree analogies. Come for a walk and make your own tree analogies as we Empathize with you in the forest 🌲🌲🌳🌳
