SIGMA CARES FOR ITS OWN - Passing of Phi Beta Sigma's President Emeritus
My Dear Brothers in Sigma:
It is with a sorrowful heart that I inform you of the passing of Phi Beta Sigma's 24th International President and President Emeritus, The Honorable Demetrius C. Newton, Sr. President Newton departed this life after a prolonged illness early this morning in his beloved home city of Birmingham, Alabama.
President Newton loved Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He was a tireless worker for 'the Cause'. He struggled to get out of his sick bed just so that he could make it to our Conclave in July. It took every ounce of energy he had to deliver what would be his final speech to the delegation. How privileged you were if you were in the number!
It is now time for the Brothers of Sigma to show our love for President Newton and his family. We have been informed that the funeral could be as early as THIS SATURDAY OR MONDAY. Please start making your arrangements with those dates in mind, understanding that the family could decide to hold the services next weekend. Once we have a definitive answer, you will be informed. At this point, we want you to get prepared. We want Sigmas in Birmingham by the hundreds to celebrate the life of this great Brother!
Let us keep the Newton family in prayer as they go through their hour of bereavement.
