Fearless: Awakening to My Life's Purpose Through Breast Cancer (Brown Books, October 2012) is about my transformation and how I learned that a challenge can be a gift. Fearless is an account of my upbringing in Liberia—which was uprooted when when I was 15 years old, and my family was forced to flee to the U.S.—to living the American Dream, watching it all fall apart with a breast cancer diagnosis

Today, I had my annual mammogram. 🩷

Twenty years into survivorship, these appointments still matter deeply to me. Maybe even more now.

As survivors, as women, as mothers, daughters, sisters, friends . . . we spend so much time taking care of everyone else that it can be easy to delay taking care of ourselves. But prioritizing your health is not selfish. It’s an act of self-love, wisdom, and survival. It's an act of honoring your body - the vehicle that houses our spirit and that takes us through this life.

Early detection is key. Finding the tumor early and being proactive saved mine. While everyone's story is different, we do know that the sooner you find and act, the better the chances are of living a longer life and having a better quality of life.

And while mammograms are often associated with older women, younger women — especially those at higher risk, with family history, dense breasts, genetic mutations, or symptoms that don’t feel right — must learn to advocate for themselves early and unapologetically.

Know your body.
Ask questions.
Push for answers.
Keep your appointments.
Do not ignore what your body is trying to tell you.

After 20 years of survivorship, I understand something in a deeper way now:

Longevity is built in the quiet decisions we make consistently . . . the appointments we keep, the tests we schedule, the moments we choose ourselves before crisis forces us to.

Your life is worth protecting.
Your future is worth planning for.
And your presence here matters more than you know. 💕

Please schedule the appointment.

This April, as the world around us begins to bloom, is reflecting on something just as powerful—the strength of a community that grows together.

For 20 years, Tigerlily Foundation has stood beside young women facing cancer—offering support, education, advocacy, and connection in moments that can feel overwhelming and isolating. But this work has never been done alone. It has always been powered by you.

In every story you share. In every hand you extended to someone at the beginning of their journey. Together, we have built more than programs—we have built a community of care. The Tigerlily team believes that philanthropy is not just about giving—it’s about belonging. It’s about saying, “I see you. I’m with you. You matter.”

This month, we invite you to Bloom Together with us.

Here are a few pages excerpted from the newsletter. 🌸🩷
