ONE REVENGE KISS CHANGED EVERYTHING — THE STRANGER SHE USED WAS THE MAFIA KING
Lena Carter only wanted to survive one humiliating moment.
She grabbed a stranger’s collar, whispered “kiss me,” and prayed her ex would finally stop looking at her like she was broken.
But the man she chose was Alessandro Moretti — and once he kissed her, the entire ballroom changed.
The charity gala looked like it had been built for women who never had to wonder if they belonged.
Crystal chandeliers poured warm gold over polished marble. Champagne glasses flashed under soft lights. Diamonds rested on wrists and throats like quiet proof that some people were born already forgiven. The air smelled of white roses, expensive perfume, and old money.
Lena stood near the edge of the room with a champagne flute in her hand.
She had not taken one sip.
Her fingers were too tight around the stem.
Her smile felt borrowed.
She had told herself she came because Maya was right. Because hiding in her apartment after the breakup was not healing. Because working double shifts in pediatric ICU, then going home to microwave soup, was not the same as living.
She had told herself she was ready to walk back into the world.
Then she saw Julian Reed.
And the lie collapsed.
He was across the ballroom, laughing too loudly at something that was not funny. He had always laughed like that when he wanted to be noticed. Navy suit. Perfect hair. Careless confidence. The same face that had once sat across Lena’s kitchen table and promised forever while his phone lit up with messages from another woman.
And that woman was now beside him.
Samantha.
Tall. Blonde. Polished. Wrapped in emerald silk that looked like wealth had personally chosen her. Her diamonds were tasteful enough to be more expensive than loud ones. Her hand rested on Julian’s arm with the casual ownership of someone who had not had to beg him for honesty.
Lena hated that she knew her name.
She hated that she had learned it from Instagram at two in the morning, scrolling until her eyes burned, comparing dresses, vacations, captions, cheekbones — everything.
She hated that Julian had turned her into a woman investigating her own replacement.
“You need to stop staring,” Maya whispered beside her.
“I’m not staring.”
“You are absolutely staring, and he knows it.”
Too late.
Julian saw her.
Their eyes met across the room, and suddenly the music thinned. The laughter blurred. The clink of glasses disappeared beneath the old humiliation of being seen by the person who hurt you and knowing he remembered exactly where the wound was.
Then he smiled.
Not kindly.
Not with regret.
Like he knew she was still bleeding.
“Oh, no,” Maya muttered. “We’re leaving.”
But Julian was already walking over, Samantha floating beside him like expensive perfume.
“Lena,” he said smoothly. “I didn’t know you’d be here.”
Liar.
The guest list had gone out weeks ago.
“Julian,” Lena said.
Her voice sounded calm.
That felt like a miracle.
“Samantha,” he added, turning toward the blonde, “this is Lena.”
Samantha smiled with her mouth, not her eyes.
“Julian has told me so much about you.”
Lena almost laughed.
She doubted that.
Julian never liked telling stories where he looked guilty.
“We’re here supporting the Children’s Hospital Foundation,” Julian said. “Samantha’s family is one of the main donors.”
Of course they were.
Samantha’s family name probably sat on plaques Lena walked past at three in the morning while carrying medication trays and praying children made it through the night.
“That’s wonderful,” Lena said. “I work in pediatric ICU, so I know exactly how much the foundation means.”
A small blade wrapped in courtesy.
Samantha’s smile tightened.
Julian simply glanced around, already done with her.
“Well, enjoy your evening.”
And just like that, he dismissed her.
Again.
Lena felt the tears rise, hot and dangerous. Crying here would destroy her. Not in front of Julian. Not in front of Samantha. Not in front of this glittering room.
Then she saw him.
A stranger standing alone near the bar.
Tall. Dark-haired. Broad-shouldered. Black suit cut like armor. Eyes fixed on her with terrifying stillness.
Lena crossed the room before fear could stop her.
She grabbed his lapel.
“I need you to do something for me,” she whispered.
His eyebrow lifted.
“What would that be?”
“Kiss me.”..
