Yesterday ⬅️ we asked what are your favorite ways to improve 🏃 ? This weeks study examined one of the many different interventions: backwards versus forward running.
The backwards running ✅outperformed✅ the forward group to a meaningful amount for #10-m sprint and counter movement jump.
This could be due to the fact that this may have been a novel stimulus for these subjects, as backwards running is not as common of a sprint training practice. It is interesting though that the backwards running performance ➡️ carried over to early stage forward sprinting. This could be due to the high nature of backwards running as this is typically associated with the early muscular 🦵demands from stage of sprinting.
❗️Before we all start running backwards❗️the differences between these groups was not enough to give up traditional sprinting all together. However, this does show there can be some effectiveness to work it in. This is ✅especially✅ so given that most sports involve a TON of backwards and multi-directional running anyways.
Some 👎 limitations of this study include the age of these subjects (13-15) as pretty much throwing anything at them will make them better. The authors also ❌failed❌ to have any control for outside training such as other sports. We want to see these things addressed in future studies.
