Day 3 of our Kody spotlight: a story he loves telling, and what he believes about this work.

"One wedding perfectly captures who I am and how I approach this.

On the morning of the wedding, the couple got bad news: the live musician scheduled to perform their ceremony couldn't make it. What should've been a stress-free morning turned into anxiety and uncertainty.

Rather than let them scramble, I stepped in. With only a few hours to prepare, I learned the ceremony music, rehearsed as much as I could, and performed the songs live myself, singing and playing guitar for the ceremony.

The couple never expected their DJ to become their ceremony musician that day. But in that moment, the job wasn't about staying in my lane. It was about doing whatever was necessary to protect their wedding experience.

The ceremony went off beautifully. Most guests had no idea there'd been a crisis behind the scenes.

That reinforced something I strongly believe: my role isn't just to provide a service. It's to be a trusted partner who makes sure the day is everything they dreamed, even when the unexpected happens. Sometimes that means reading a dance floor. Sometimes it means managing a timeline. And occasionally, it means picking up a guitar and becoming the musician."

That's the Kody signature in a single story.

When the plan fell apart, he didn't find a fix. He became the fix. That's what it means to be trusted with the whole day. 🎤

Day 2 of our Kody spotlight: his story.

This is the part of the series where we let you in. The long version, in his own words. Sit back and relax .

"Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was constantly putting on little concerts for my family. I'd gather everyone into the living room, announce the show, and perform whatever I had dreamed up that day. Sometimes I'd even convince one of my siblings to join me… whether they wanted to or not.

My parents enrolled me in piano lessons when I was young. I quit after a few years, which is still one of my biggest regrets. Then I picked up the alto saxophone in elementary school and played for years, people told me I was a natural. Eventually I moved on from that too.

When I was a teenager, I picked up a guitar, mostly because I thought it would make me look cool. I taught myself with online tutorials and YouTube videos and quickly became obsessed. Drums followed shortly after. Before long I got thrown into the fire, asked to play drums live with a band despite having very little experience. Thankfully, rhythm always came naturally to me, and I fell in love with performing live.

Looking back, every instrument taught me something. The rhythm and timing I developed as a drummer became the foundation for how I DJ today, smooth transitions, unique mixes, moments on the dance floor that feel natural and effortless.

My journey into DJing started in 2007, in high school. A few friends and I started a technology club, and when the school didn't have the budget to hire a DJ for the Sweetheart Hop, we decided to figure it out ourselves. We scavenged spare equipment from the band room and the theater department and somehow built a fully functioning DJ setup.

I still remember standing there with hundreds of students staring at me, hoping I'd play the right song. That pressure taught me one of the most important skills I use today: reading a crowd. I learned to pivot quickly, adapt to the energy in the room, and make sure everyone was having a great time. We ended up DJing a lot more school events after that.

Shortly after, I booked my first wedding, despite never having attended a wedding myself. Looking back, that's a little crazy, but it forced me to learn fast. Over time I developed the approach that defines my weddings today: a blend of musician, entertainer, emcee, and experience creator, focused on making every celebration feel uniquely personal.

My path to Yo DJ came in 2019, when Corey reached out. We were approaching weddings in very similar ways, and he saw potential in bringing me onto the team. Before making it official, we worked several weddings together to make sure our personalities, standards, and philosophies aligned. It became clear very quickly that we shared the same goal: creating unforgettable experiences for couples and their guests.

I've been fortunate to turn a lifelong passion for music into a career. And every wedding still feels like another chance to put on a great show, just like those little family concerts I was hosting all those years ago."

That's Kody. Always humble but incredibly talented. 🫶🏽

Drop those throwback photos, Kody. We need to see the living room concert era. 📸

Final day of our DJ Matt spotlight. What he loves about entertainment and some stories.

He's got more than one. Pull up a chair.

In his words:

"One that always comes to mind: Gary LeVox from Rascal Flatts live-streamed to a wedding I was doing. It was a surprise from the groom…Rascal Flatts was the bride's favorite band. I had it playing on my TVs. She just bawled the whole night.

Another one: a benefit for a man with cancer. The theme was 'If you're going through hell, keep on going.' I played that Rodney Atkins song throughout the night. At the end, Rodney Atkins himself came in person, met the guy, and left a large donation. The guy had a total recovery. A fairytale ending.

And then there's the family I've done eight weddings for. They rock the house every single time. So much joy and happiness just oozes from them. Connecting deeply with a family like that…that's what makes this job easy and gratifying."

That's the Matt signature in a single thread.

He doesn't measure this work in songs played. He measures it in moments witnessed. A surprise that breaks a bride open. A song that carries a man through a fight for his life. A family that keeps coming back because joy is contagious.

His whole job is making space for those moments. Then watching what they become. 🎤
