A wildlife bridge in California just received its first successful travelers — three mule deer.
Motion-sensor cameras captured the deer crossing a new wildlife overpass above **U.S. Route 97 in Siskiyou County**, marking an early victory for conservationists, engineers, and highway-safety planners.
The bridge was built to solve a deadly problem: roads cut through animal migration routes. When deer, elk, bobcats, bears, mountain lions, and other animals try to cross highways, the result can be fatal for wildlife and dangerous for drivers.
The new Route 97 project includes a wildlife overpass, a concrete underpass, and about **three miles of fencing** designed to guide animals toward safe crossing points instead of open traffic. Early reports say the first mule deer were recorded even before the project was fully complete, showing that animals are already beginning to use the structure.
Between 2015 and 2020, vehicles reportedly killed **50 deer and 16 elk** along this stretch of highway, making the area a major priority for wildlife-crossing work.
These bridges do more than prevent roadkill. They reconnect fragmented habitats, helping animals move, feed, migrate, find mates, and maintain healthier populations.
California is also building the much larger **Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing** in Southern California, designed to help species like mountain lions safely cross one of the busiest freeways in the state.
It is a powerful reminder that roads do not have to be barriers forever. With the right design, humans can build infrastructure that protects both people and wildlife.
