There are some sessions you walk away from with a full memory card, and then there are the sessions you walk away from carrying in your heart forever.

Meeting Oban and his family through The Tilly Project was one of those sessions.

From the moment I arrived, you could feel it — the quiet mix of heartbreak and overwhelming love that fills a room when a family knows their time together is becoming limited. But even in the heaviness, there was so much beauty. Soft forehead kisses. Gentle hands resting on fur they had held a thousand times before. The kind of looks exchanged without words because love that deep doesn’t need explaining.

Oban wasn’t just a pet. He was family. A best friend. A constant chapter woven into their everyday lives. And during our session, my goal wasn’t to create perfect photos. It was to preserve connection. To freeze the little things that grief tries so hard to steal from memory later — the way he leaned into them, the comfort of his presence, the laughter shared between tears, the unconditional love filling every second.

These legacy sessions always remind me how important photography truly is. Photographs become anchors. They hold onto moments our hearts are terrified of losing. Long after the hardest days have passed, these images become proof of a life deeply loved.

It was an incredible honor to document Oban’s story and the bond his family shares with him. Sessions like this are emotional, raw, and incredibly sacred. And I will never take for granted the trust families place in me during such vulnerable moments.

The Tilly Project is an international nonprofit organization that connects pet owners with photographers who provide end-of-life and legacy pet photography sessions. Their mission is to help families preserve meaningful memories with beloved pets while also offering resources and support surrounding anticipatory grief and pet loss.
