What’s Happening: 📋 In May, the Alaska Oil and Gas Assoc. (AOGA) asked the BLM/DOI to make it easier for them to drill in the Western Arctic. Three days later, the BLM agreed to start a review process. ⚠️ AOGA is the voice for big oil companies like ConocoPhillips & Exxon. 🔄 The revolving-door dynamics here are hard to ignore: AOGA’s former president is now in a senior Alaska role at the DOI while AOGA is pushing Interior for a new fast-track drilling rule. Why It Matters: 🏭 New drilling projects in the Western Arctic could be rubber-stamped, limiting project-specific public and environmental reviews. 🦌 Oil companies can request exemptions from caribou, habitat & spill protections w/out public review. ✅ Approvals could be pushed through in 60 days, making required & critical Tribal consultations difficult. 🛢️ Under this rule, if a project meets the requirements, BLM has to say YES. They can only cancel a permit if it was “fraudulently obtained.” 🌲This is just the beginning. After it works, they’ll head to the Lower 48. Speak up NOW! 🌎 The Western Arctic is one of the last intact ecosystems on Earth & helps keep our climate under control, what happens there affects ALL of us.
