Standard teaching practices can unintentionally reinforce patterns of injustice. The Elementary Mathematics Laboratory (July 20–24 in Detroit) is a space to investigate and challenge those patterns. By watching live elementary math instruction, we analyze how specific instructional decisions can open doors for students who have been historically underserved. 🚪

When was the last time you watched expert teaching in real-time? 🍎

Teaching is often a private act, but the Elementary Mathematics Laboratory (July 6–10 in Sarnia, Ontario, and July 20–24 in Detroit, Michigan) turns the classroom into a shared space for learning.

Each day, participants observe a live, two-hour mathematics class with elementary students. You don't just watch; you:

✅ Analyze instructional decisions as they happen.
✅ Unpack student thinking in real-time.
✅ Participate in discussions with the instructional team.

It's an immersive deep dive into the complexity of teaching. Whether you're a veteran or a new teacher, you'll walk away with a refined perspective on what's possible in your own classroom.

We want to share the core strategy behind the Institute we're holding for teacher educators on July 30–31, 2026, in Ann Arbor: backwards design.

This principle is simple: Don't start with content; start with the specific teaching practices your candidates must master.

At the Backwards Design Institute for Teacher Educators, you'll work through a series of design tasks that help you move beyond curriculum mapping toward deep practice specification. You'll learn how to take a complex area of teaching (e.g., teaching reading to first graders) and decompose it into explicit, learnable pieces for novices.

A well-designed program is rooted in this shared, explicit understanding of practice. We're here to help you build it. 🧰
