old plying to Chubby Checker's "The Twist". I joined the high school concert (1st chair snare and tympani) and marching bands. I played in my step dads “country/50's/60”s pop” band in local clubs at age 15! (Slipping me a couple rum and cokes! LOL! 1970-71 ish) Also played the various local/high school rock band things, clubs, etc...
After a brief stint, 7 yrs., with our Uncle Sam, in 1987 I deci
ded to attend the "Percussion Institute of Technology" (PIT) at "Musicians Institute" (MI) in Hollywood, CA. To prepare for this, I improved my knowledge/skills with local teachers, one of them being a local private instructor, Tom Freeman, a student of George Lawrence Stones (author of “Stick Control“, drummers will know who he is...). In the summer of 1988, I moved to Hollywood, CA. (come on Jed, swimming pools...movie stars!) to attend the "Percussion Institute of Technology" (PIT) at "Musicians Institute" (MI) in Hollywood, CA. There I added to my musical knowledge. I played with and learned with/from pros such as; Doane Perry-drummer for Jethro Tull. Keith Wyatt- L.A. Blues guitar great and member of The Blasters. Tim Bogert-Bass Guitar legend from Vanilla Fudge (whom Led Zeppelin OPENED for), Cactus, Beck/Bogert & Appice (Tim actually did sound checks with Hendrix in his "Vanilla Fudge" days, cool!!), ...and (more name dropping)...Bobby Gabrielle-core classroom instructor, Chuck Flores(RIP) -Jazz/Big band great, Rich Garcia and Joey Heredia as Latin percussion instructors, Joe Porcaro/Ralph Razze-Technique instructors,Gary Garbatini, Fred Dinkins (my private lessons instructor), Gary Hess-Reading Instructor, Chuck Silverman(RIP)-Summer course instructor (MI prep), Ed Roscetti-Electronic drum related applications and many more known and lesser known great teachers and players at the school in classroom/workshop/stage performance settings. Graduated with "Honors" in September 1989 and started working with a 3 pc. Blues/Rock band, "The Homefries" in L.A. area clubs with a GIT grad...Daryl Boggs, Guitarists, and Bassist/Vocalist Niles Spolin, an L.A. Spent a total of 4 years out there. Held a steady Saturday night gig at "The Mint" in LA for a year (Basically, the house band as when we auditioned we were hired on their opening weekend and they asked us to stay). We recorded a 4 song demo of originals. Played a private party for "Rhino Records" execs and VIP guests from Hollywood. We were brought to David Geffen's attention at Atlantic Records back in the day by a VP at Capital Records who was a relative of a band member. Unfortunately, this was also the time of Stevie Ray Vaughn's death and Blues/Rock was taking a resulting downturn in popularity. During this time period the Rodney King riots were also happening in LA and due to unforeseen circumstances the band went the way as most and split up...tried out with a couple different bands in LA as time went by but it was not to be.
...I decided to return to my roots. Being married now, we wanted to raise kids in NH. not LA! After moving back to New Hampshire in 1993, I played in a "GB" band with the owner of a local music store, (Strings and Things) Mike Bilodeau, doing weddings, events and the “Mt. Washington” boat weekly dinner dance cruise on Lake Winnipesaukee (I must say was very cool). Also did a short lived blues/rock thing on the side with Mike. Worked with Mike Gallant, "Mikey G", in an open mike night house band at the bar "Stormy Mondays" in Merrimack, NH. ( it's no longer there now). Eventually left as opportunities arose and worked with a 5 pc. rock/pop band "One Way Street". Worked a short (very short) time with Todd Bowie, a guitarist/ tech with Joe Walsh(Eagles), Lindsey Buckingham and Beck. FYI: Todd was also a guitarist with the local NH rock band from the 80's, "Toiz". He was creating his musical career in the Chicago area making it tough to play here in NH...so, more opportunities arose...worked with the bands "Tantrum", a 5 pc. rock band, "Hogmire" a 3 pc. rock band and a charity gig with the rock band “Sett”. Played in TWO bands, "Short Notice", a classic rock/pop cover/originals band and a funky jam/rock originals band, "JAI" (Just An Idea), now known as "The Shardz", with the very talented ex-members of "Jamantics", who opened up for "Little Feat" at the Hampton Beach Casino, Freeland Hubbard (Guitar) and Eric Reingold (Bass) along with another very talented mutual friend, Jonny Santana (Guitar). Played with a local cover band "Rockerbox" for a short time. Things coming back full circle....I worked with "Hogmire" for a while, again, featuring Sue Schott on vocals (Sue's husband, Rob Schott, is also a recent addition as another guitarists. A 5-piece again!). This was short lived but fun. I am no longer with that band. Currently looking musically, a couple things always on the burner, so,
I am available for paying gigs and studio work!!! UPDATE: I have connected with an AWESOME Bassist/Vocalist and we're forming a new trio with great musicians! Looking forward to getting out there again! Stayed tuned. Check out all my pages as I'll update them. Have a great day.
