A snowstorm update from the mayor:
Snowstorm update:
The Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) has experienced a significant snow fall within the past 24 hours. The National Weather Service measured 9” near the airport, and 11” on the lower hillside as of early this afternoon. Residents are reporting larger amounts throughout town.
Municipal crews are currently working to clear municipally owned roads. Snow operations generally start with arterials (main roads like Lake Otis, Spenard etc.), school routes, and then move into the neighborhoods. All municipally owned main roads have been plowed at least once, though additional snow accumulation is likely.
Night shift crews will continue their operations this evening, starting with downtown clearing and snow hauling operations. Our goal is to have downtown fully cleared by Friday morning.
Street Plow Operations:
• Currently, the MOA has 21 graders operating out of a fleet of 30. As with many employers needing CDL drivers, the Municipality has been actively recruiting for equipment operators and is currently hiring to fill these roles. People interested in applying can find more information at https://www.muni.org/Departments/employee_relations/Pages/jol.aspx or by calling Human Resources at (907) 343-4425.
• In addition to the road clearing operations, the MOA has 9 sidewalk plows that are clearing pedestrian paths in Anchorage.
This is a major snowfall requiring all hands-on deck. Crews are doing their best to ensure berms don’t accumulate in front of driveways, but due to the large nature of this snowfall this is not always preventable. We are asking residents to be patient, limit road travel and parking on streets, when possible, to give plow crews the ability to efficiently execute this large-scale plow out.
To see which roads have been cleared, go here: https://anchorage-street-maintenance-muniorg.hub.arcgis.com/pages/snow-plowing. The map is updated at the end of each shift.
Public Transportation:
• People Mover: Buses are running today. Please expect delays and/or detours due to road and traffic conditions.
• AnchorRIDES: Effective immediately, all future AnchorRIDES trips for the remainder of the day, December 7, 2022, are cancelled. AnchorRIDES service will likely be impacted until neighborhood roads are cleared. For information on this service and potential impacts, resident may call (907) 343-6543.
Solid Waste Services:
• Customers who had a scheduled trash pickup today have been advised to bring your carts back to your homes to help facilitate plowing operations. We will service your carts next week, any excess up to 3 black bags, or 6 white bags of trash will not be charged due to the delay in pick up.
• Normal trash pickup service is expected to continue tomorrow, December 8, 2022.
• Customers with questions may contact [email protected] for more information.
