*The Anchorage Economic Development Corporation collects cost of living data by measuring the relative price of consumer goods and services. The Cost-of-Living Index (COLI) is measured in 250 urban areas around the country by the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER).

“Along with worker shortages and rising costs, another factor is likely at play locally – Anchorage's aging population. That potentially shrinks the customer base, said Jon Bittner, president and CEO of the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation”

“We're losing folks in the younger demographics across the board,” he said. “The younger folks, I think, are the ones that are up at four in the morning looking for pancakes or whatever, predominantly. And I think that's going to hit people's bottom line.”

Bittner, a lifelong Anchorage resident, said additional late-night restaurants would make the city a more enjoyable place to live. He said many of the classic 24-hour operations were community spaces for kids and young adults when he was growing up.”
