Receiving treatment for psychosis early can greatly improve treatment outcomes and enhance quality of life. It can also significantly reduce the risk of developing schizophrenia in the future.

Catching the signs and symptoms of psychosis early can improve treatment outcomes. Because symptoms may develop gradually, they can be difficult to recognize or differentiate at first.

Possible symptoms may include hallucinations, paranoia, delusions, difficulty thinking clearly, challenges completing daily self-care (such as hygiene), social withdrawal, disorganized or incoherent speech, and difficulty distinguishing reality from fantasy.

July is Psychosis Awareness Month. So what is psychosis?

Psychosis refers to a set of symptoms that can be distressing for individuals who experience them. It commonly involves hallucinations and delusions. It can be present alone or as part of a mental health condition.

Each year, an estimated 15–100 people per 100,000 develop psychosis. Onset is uncommon before age 14, with rates increasing between ages 15 and 17.
