Why I use Pulling Collars!
I started using pulling style collars about 13 years ago and never looked back.
Pulling collars attach through the pommel of your saddle and to the girth, instead of using the D rings. I love the look of them and I love that they allow more freedom of movement in the shoulder. They're great for horses with a broader chest and shoulder, and if you do high speed performance events, they can really pull into it without any discomfort or interference. I noticed that my saddle stays in place much better than other collars I've used and they're so easy to adjust to get the perfect fit on almost any horse. Give them a try!
Don't worry about reeling that head in. Don't pull, don't saw on the reins, don't ask for it at all. Use circles for stretch and encourage them to reach forward with the hind legs, lifting the back. The head will follow as they build muscle and learn to relax into their work. Even if it's only a few steps, keep building and keep working at it. A week ago, this mare had her ears in the sky and very hollow. Now she's building the strength to carry herself properly and we're seeing her stretch her head down and keep forward. I'm not looking for perfection, I'm not ready to ask her to be more 'on the bit', since she's not ready. We're going to keep building, until she has the strength to hold that nice trot for more than a few steps, THEN we can start fine tuning.
Part of the clinic today!
This is Billy. He's a 10 year old Quarter Horse, he's still green and he has a tendency to be flighty and spooky under saddle at any given moment. So, today, we worked on confidence building and explained how to work through the spooking and keeping our own reactions to a minimum. Being calm in the situation and using leadership is the key!
Hope everyone had a great weekend! Time to get back to it! 💪
I look forward to seeing everyone at our clinic this Saturday. If you haven't RSVP'd to the event yet, please do so! 😊
