Most of you might be aware that this Fourth of July marks the 250th anniversary of the United States.
This year, we're celebrating the freedom to read stories that inspire and ignite. We have two displays in-store that highlight the beautiful diversity that made, and continues to make, our nation. Stop by for recommendations that commemorate the tapestry of voices that envelop all of us, whether we realize it or not.
You might be familiar with this highlighted sonnet! It's "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus. This poem is permanently stamped on the Statue of Liberty and is widely known and celebrated for giving the statue a new purpose, "turning Liberty into a welcoming mother, a symbol of hope to the outcasts and downtrodden of the world" (Paul Auster).
In recent years, the poem was revised and there was a proposed rewrite that would have changed the line as "Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet, and who will not become a public charge" instead of the line "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." This proposed administration rule was later blocked by a federal appeals court.

Emma Lazarus' poem, written in 1883, unchanged, continues to resonate with us to this day.
