The refusal to settle is what gives Geoffrey Johnson’s paintings their tension and atmosphere. Balancing realism and abstraction, his work shifts between precision and looseness, clarity and ambiguity, always searching for something just beyond the obvious.

"I hope my work is constantly changing, because the worst thing to me would be to become boring or repetitive. My process changes with the painting style, depending on if there is more realism or abstraction. For example, sometimes things are really loose and other times not. So, the 'sweet spot' in the process varies from painting to painting and I'm always in search of a new one." - Geoffrey Johnson, American Art Collector, Issue 247, "Familiar Atmosphere" by Michael Clawson, page 59.

In "Ode to Warhol II", Geoffrey Johnson strips the image down to its essentials, pulling from one of the most recognizable images in Pop Art history: Andy Warhol’s iconic Elvis series. Warhol based the work on a publicity still from the 1960 Western film Flaming Star, transforming Elvis Presley into a repeated, larger-than-life cultural symbol through silkscreen printing.

Fun fact: Warhol’s "Double Elvis" paintings were created in 1963 during the height of America’s obsession with celebrity culture and Western films. One version, "Double Elvis (Ferus Type)", sold for over $37 million in 2019, proving the enduring power of both Elvis and Warhol in American visual culture.

Johnson reinterprets that imagery through his own restrained, atmospheric lens, reducing the figure to gesture, silhouette, and presence while still carrying the unmistakable swagger of the original icon.
