There are some real gaps in rural communities when it comes to cancer prevention and early detection—and those barriers mean people aren’t always getting the information or care they need.
Many cancers can be treated successfully when they’re caught early, but screening rates in rural areas are falling behind. The Prevent Cancer Foundation’s 2026 Early Detection Survey found that only 48% of rural Americans had a routine checkup or cancer screening in the past year. In urban and suburban areas, that number jumps to 56%.
There’s also more skepticism of the health care system and a lack of information on lifestyle factors that can reduce cancer risk. But the good news is that these gaps can be closed. Reliable information does exist, and getting screened is one of the most effective ways to catch cancer early. When we make screening information easier to understand and easier to access, more people get the care they need.
