Flooring Trends Hitting the New Mexico Market Right Now
The flooring industry is shifting — and here in New Mexico, we're seeing it firsthand.
Whether you're outfitting a new commercial space in Albuquerque, a hospitality project in Santa Fe, or a renovation across the state, here's what's leading the conversation in 2026:
Warm, earthy tones are back. Cool grays are fading out. Designers and contractors are moving toward honey, caramel, and terracotta-inspired palettes — tones that honestly feel right at home in the Southwest.
LVT & performance flooring are dominating commercial installs. Durability without sacrificing style is the priority. Waterproof, scratch-resistant, easy to maintain — it checks every box for New Mexico's high-traffic commercial spaces.
Sustainability matters more than ever. Contractors and building owners are asking about eco-friendly options, especially with green building standards becoming more common in commercial projects across the state.
Modular & carpet tile systems are still growing. Flexibility, easy replacement, and design versatility make them a go-to for offices, healthcare, and education spaces — all sectors actively building and renovating here in NM right now.
At Star Sales, we stock what the market actually needs — and right now, the New Mexico market needs solutions that perform, look great, and hold up to real Southwest conditions.
Ask us what's moving. We're here to help you stay ahead.

When specifying glue-down LVT, understanding the wear layer is critical to long-term performance—not just initial cost.
What is the wear layer?
The wear layer is the clear, protective top surface of LVT that resists scratches, scuffs, and daily abrasion. It’s measured in mils (1 mil = 0.001 inch), and that thickness directly impacts durability.
Here’s how 12 mil and 22 mil compare:
🔹 12 mil wear layer
• Typically used in light commercial environments
• Suitable for offices, small businesses, and low-traffic areas
• Performs well under foot traffic, but limited resistance to heavy rolling loads or constant abrasion
• Lower initial cost, but may require earlier replacement in demanding spaces
🔹 22 mil wear layer
• Engineered for heavy commercial use
• Commonly specified in education, healthcare, retail, and public spaces
• Greater resistance to scratches, dents, and sustained traffic
• Better suited for rolling loads (carts, chairs, equipment)
• Higher upfront investment, but improved lifecycle performance
Key takeaway:
Wear layer selection should be driven by traffic levels, use conditions, and maintenance expectations—not just budget. Underspecifying can lead to premature wear and increased replacement costs, while proper specification ensures durability and long-term value.
Choosing the correct wear layer is a performance decision—not just a price decision.
