Happy ! Founded in 2004, this international celebration aims to bring awareness to efforts for the almost 400 species in the order Psittaciformes, which includes all parrots, parakeets, macaws, cockatiels, and cockatoos. 45% of those species have been assessed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as either Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered, or even Extinct in the Wild. Along with habitat loss, they are in danger of poaching for their colorful feathers and the pet trade.
Many would-be pet owners are not prepared for the high level of care parrots require, or their long lifespans, and quickly find they are not able to provide a suitable home. The ABQ BioPark Zoo is home to 13 of these amazing, intelligent species. Tell us which of the below you've seen!
