✅Understanding Water Belly (Ascites) in ChickensWater belly, or ascites, is a condition in chickens where fluid accumulates in the abdominal cavity. It is common in older hens but can affect any age. 👇Signs of Water Belly: Swollen, fluid-filled abdomen – Feels soft and balloon-like. Difficulty breathing – Due to fluid pressing on internal organs. Lethargy – Less active, weak, and slow movements. Pale comb and wattles – Poor circulation due to fluid pressure. Waddling gait – Wide stance and trouble walking. Loss of appetite and weight loss – Despite a swollen belly. Causes of Water BellyWater belly is often linked to heart or liver failure, which leads to poor circulation and fluid leakage into the abdomen. Common causes include: High-sodium diets – Increases fluid retention. Heart disease – Often genetic in meat breeds like Cornish Cross. Liver damage – From infections, toxins, or fatty liver disease. Poor ventilation – Leads to low oxygen levels, stressing the heart. Obesity – More pressure on internal organs. Respiratory infections – Chronic illness affects oxygen intake.Treatment for Water BellyThere is no cure, but supportive care can help manage symptoms.Draining fluid (with caution) – A veterinarian or experienced chicken keeper can use a sterile syringe (18-gauge needle) to slowly remove fluid from the lower belly. This relieves pressure but is only temporary. Diuretics (under vet supervision) – Some use dandelion tea or small amounts of parsley to help reduce fluid retention. Improve diet and ventilation – Low-sodium feed, fresh greens, and proper airflow can help.Supportive care – Keep the hen comfortable with soft bedding and minimal stress. Cull if suffering – If the bird is in constant distress, euthanasia may be the humane choice.

Home Economics: We tested out a waffle batter today using Kels mini waffle maker and special shoutout to our precious Snuggles for providing her egg for us to use in this recipe.

Note: I altered the recipe by adding fiber powder and substituted the sugar for monkfruit sweetener. I must say I had her make me 4 of them they were so good (and I really don’t care for waffles much)😋
