Animal Protection Voters

BIG NEWS! We are thrilled to share with you that—despite years of opposition and litigation by the fur-trapping industry—Roxy’s Law is undefeated!
Roxy’s Law prohibits the use of traps, snares, and wildlife poisons on New Mexico public lands. Animal Protection New Mexico and our legislative arm Animal Protection Voters led the statewide campaign, alongside members of the Trap Free New Mexico coalition, that resulted in the passage of Roxy’s Law by the New Mexico Legislature in 2021 (Senate Bill 32).
However, state and national trapping organizations sued the State of New Mexico, challenging a narrow provision of the law—and hoping to convince a court to overturn the entire law as a remedy.
We celebrated last year when a federal District Court dismissed the trappers’ lawsuit. But then the trappers appealed. Our organizations joined forces with other allies to submit briefs to the court in defense of Roxy’s Law, and we have been waiting for a ruling from the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Now we are celebrating again the Court’s answer: that the trappers’ lawsuit was rightfully dismissed, and Roxy’s Law stands as the law of New Mexico!

"While the State Land Office often flies under the radar for many voters, it remains one of New Mexico’s most consequential agencies, managing nine million surface acres — including a vast array of fragile ecosystems that are home to native wildlife — to fund education and public institutions. For those wanting the most qualified leader to take the helm at the State Land Office, the clear choice is Matthew McQueen."
-Stacy Sutton Kerby, APV Chief Government Affairs Officer
