I didn’t know my grandmother well, but the things people remember most about her are some of the same things people call out in me. She loved to bake and feed people. She was creative, artistic, funny, and resourceful. Today I made one of her most famous cakes, her blackberry wine cake, which she used to sell for extra pocket money.

It’s taking everything in me to allow it to completely cool before cutting a slice. The smell alone brings back so many memories of family reunions and summer backyard barbecues with yellow-meated watermelon as she sat on the porch with a tall glass of sweet tea laughing at us kids trying to see who could spit the seeds the farthest.

Don’t worry, Grandma, I remembered to double the glaze. 😉 And I won’t publicly share the recipe in case I need to make myself a little pocket money too. (Advice given when I was just learning to bake. 😊)
