Reposted • .studio Vote in honor of Navajo code talkers, Jimmy King and Howard and Chester Nez and Isleta Pueblo Marine veteran Miguel Trujillo who were not allowed to vote, even though they had served in World War II.
During WWII, King and Nez were among 29 Navajo men who became Marines and created an unbreakable code based on their Navajo language. Their work was considered crucial to the Allied victory in the Pacific war.
They tried but weren’t allowed to register to vote because along with most New Mexico Natives, were considered as “Indians not taxed” by the state’s constitution and were prohibited from voting. Miguel Trujillo took the county to court, and challenged the ruling, arguing that he shouldn’t be disenfranchised just because he didn’t pay property taxes on the Pueblo lands he lived on.
On Aug. 3, 1948, a panel of three federal judges agreed, and 24 years after being granted citizenship, indigenous people in New Mexico were finally given the right to vote. In 1957, Utah was the last state to ratify voting rights for Native Americans.
