Just finished and installed this asymmetric shelving unit. The house it was installed in is a home designed by Paula Baker-Laporte and Robert Laporte. They build in a style called . Sustainably built homes using straw framing methods with traditional stick frame, and timber framing methods. The homes have an over arching Japanese aesthetic through appearance and build.
The shelves were inspired from shoji screen doors that have horizontal shelf members offset with vertical supports at varying depths to support not only books and trinkets but records and a record player. All joinery utilizes basic but well executed mortise and tenon joinery. Wood used is wormy maple for the shelves and hard maple for the verticals, with two custom yellow colors on the edges to highlight and contrast.

Def feeling lucky and very grateful to be part of this one. Matt Spiniken is a phenomenal bonsai artist and even better person. He texted one day to ask if I had a stand made that would fit this tree, I replied “I don’t, but I’ve got an idea for one!” I threw a quick drawing up on my ideas board and the rest is history! Thanks for letting me accompany your amazing larch work my friend! steel work by

Install done on this take on shelving. Original request was for basic floating shelves to fit within the to walls. I presented multiple concepts, from plain to poppy, utilizing the adjacent wall to add dimension and character. THe colorful shelf inserts are less about function than they are color. Though as is they function exactly as a shelf should. You don’t always get clients that are down for something different, but when you do it’s the best. These sorts of projects makes what I do worth it. Thank you
