In 1985, Brother Mathias Barrett, a legendary friend of the homeless, founded Barrett House Shelter in a small residence on 13th Street and Mountain in Downtown Albuquerque. In 2005, the Barrett Foundation moved into a new, expanded facility in the Northeast Heights.

We were incredibly lucky to partner with Mattress Firm for a volunteer event at our shelter. Mattress Firm volunteers brought in 10 brand new mattresses to replace older beds. They also created sleep kits for the women in the shelter that included cozy socks, eye masks, lotion, and lip balm.

Staff and shelter residents were blown away by the generosity and women and children in the shelter are sleeping very well on their brand new mattresses.

Barrett Foundation's programs like Silver Linings and Linkages help provide stable housing to over 250 families across our community. But a house is just the first step in the journey to self-sufficiency. Many of these families are without important necessities like mattresses and bedding.

So we are asking for your help to turn these houses into homes for families in need. Over the next two weeks, we are collecting mattresses (sizes queen, full, and twin), bed frames, bedding, pillows, and blankets to help folks in Barrett Foundation's housing programs.

If you have any of these items to donate, please reach out to our Director of Development, Kelsey, at [email protected] to set up a pick up time.

Thank you so much to Tamaya Wellness Center for donating onions, potatoes, squash, and beans to Barrett Foundation's shelter. Barrett Foundation provides three meals each day to residents in our shelter and this donation will ensure that our meals are fresh, healthy, and delicious. We are grateful for your support!

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, our offices will be closed on Monday, January 19. We will reopen and resume normal operations on Tuesday, January 20.

We honor Dr. King’s legacy of service, justice, and compassion—values that continue to guide our work alongside families and individuals on their path to stable housing.

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
