Heading into Pride season saturated with beautiful music. First, and I will do a program of music by q***r-identifying composers and poets in Toronto (my Canadian debut!) on May 15 with —works by , , , , Chris DeBlasio, & David Del Tredici. I’m not quite sure how to put into words what it has meant to put this program together, now, with the rights of q***r people being legislated away around the world and in our own backyard. To sing out the experience of being gay, to mourn past injustices and to see history repeat itself, to celebrate the infinite iterations this identity of “q***r” can manifest—all of this in this moment is wonderful, terrifying, healing, excruciating. Whitman has indeed “written many lines about these years: the disfigurement of young men and the wars of hard tongues and closed minds.” Thank you, , for these and all of your beautiful words.

Then, I head to San Francisco to revisit Harvey Milk Reimagined with , covering the role of Harvey sung by the exquisite . It’ll be exactly three years since I covered Harvey at , and re-learning the role has been like stepping into a hug. Reacquainting myself with this icon who gave everything in the pursuit of justice is like a much-needed shot of adrenaline.
