Pinkster Is Quietly Making a Comeback Across Upstate NY 🌸🥁

A lot of people in New York have never even heard of Pinkster, despite it once being one of the biggest celebrations for Black communities in colonial New York.

Pinkster blended African traditions, music, dance, food, storytelling, and Dutch Pentecost customs into a joyful spring celebration centered around community and cultural survival. For enslaved Africans and free Black New Yorkers, it became one of the rare times families and friends could gather, celebrate, and preserve traditions.

And honestly? Seeing it return in multiple cities feels powerful.

Here are THREE Pinkster events I will be in attendance at with Adventures in Zen Books:

🌸 Original Kinderhook Black Family Reunion Pinkster Fest
📍 Kinderhook, NY
📅 Saturday, May 16, 2026
🕛 12–5 PM
Features parade, music, dancing, vendors, games, food, exhibits, and crowning of the Pinkster King.

🥁 Celebrate Pinkster at Schuyler Mansion
📍 Albany, NY
📅 Saturday, May 23
🕚 11 AM–4 PM
Live music, crafts, participatory dance, vendors, exhibits, and open house tours.

🎶 Pinkster Kingston 2026
📍 Kingston, NY
📅 Sunday, May 24, 2026
🕛 12–5 PM
Includes a Pinkster Walk, historic programming, drumming, celebration festival, and community gathering.

What I love most is that each city is reviving Pinkster differently while still centering Black joy, resilience, and history.
“Joy is an act of resistance” might honestly be the perfect Pinkster slogan.

Anybody else noticing how much hidden Black history exists right here in the Hudson Valley that we were never taught in school?

✨📚 BIG BOOK ENERGY over here at Adventures in Zen Books! 📚✨

Whew… when I say the shelves are FULL, I mean FULL full. And not just with stories, but with heart, culture, healing, joy, and a whole lot of “this is exactly what our kids needed.” 🖤

From celebrating freedom and community in Juneteenth Jubilee: Messages of Freedom. To honoring legacy and storytelling in The ABCs of Pinkster: A Story to Share to affirming beauty and identity in LaKisha’s Crown. To helping our little ones name, feel, and manage emotions in The Wildlife of Emotions we have something for everyone.

And let’s not forget the calm, the culture, and the creativity woven into books like Kimeshea & Qamir Find Their Calm, Roots & Rhythms: For the Culture Coloring Book, and so many more.

This collection? It’s not just books.
It’s a whole movement.

A movement that says:
📖 Our stories matter
🎨 Our culture belongs on every page
🧠 Our children deserve tools for their minds AND their hearts
✊🏾 Our history deserves to be celebrated out loud

And then there’s This Woman Writes and Conversations with the Motherland because storytelling doesn’t stop with the children. We’re holding space for the voices, the healing, the becoming. Because when we write, generations listen.
