Hunting Family and Friends:
With archery season around the corner, and firearm season following shortly, I wanted to discuss some of the things that I have noticed in the last 3 seasons of tracking.

The number one shot that I get called for is an expandable broad head, on the shoulder of a deer. In most of the cases that I am called on, the expandable is not able to deploy in the shoulder bone.

The second most frequent shot that I get called for is a gut shot, where the deer has been bumped.

The firearm shot I have been called the most for, is 350 Legend on the shoulder of a deer. In certain cases, the bullet has come apart on the shoulder, with an over 100 yard shot.

I am not saying that any of these circumstances are the given rule for the situation, but in over 60 successful tracks, I would make these statements,

I recommend avoiding shoulder, or hard quartering shots with an arrow in general, especially an expandable broad head.

I recommend avoiding shoulder, or hard quartering shots with a 350 Legend, over 100 yards, with current bullet construction.

I recommend giving any deer shot, ample time (30 minutes minimum), before starting your track.

I understand that shot placement, and how you handle the track after the shot, can be very challenging with the excitement one feels in harvesting a deer. Ultimately the number one thing the dog and I have going against us is a deer that has been bumped or pushed. The adrenaline of a whitetail deer will work for miles, once it has been introduced.
